🧐 Truth about Modal Analysis [Beyond Natural Frequencies 📉]

🧭 CAE Compass

Edition #17

Do you think Modal analysis is limited to finding the natural frequencies of a body/assembly alone?

Well, this edition is going to change your mind!

There's no doubt that, Modal analysis is used across industries like aerospace, automotive, civil engineering, manufacturing & what not.

While some might believe it's solely about identifying those resonant frequencies (as taught in schools), the truth is, it's a versatile tool with a lot more to offer. Don't believe it??

Myth 1: Modal analysis is only about finding natural frequencies.

Truth: Modal analysis indeed helps in identifying the natural frequencies at which a structure tends to vibrate. However, its utility extends far beyond this singular aspect.

It provides invaluable insights into how a structure responds to various forces & excitations, shedding light on its overall dynamic behavior.

Myth 2: All modes identified are physically significant.

Truth: Not every mode holds physical significance. Some may represent insignificant high-frequency modes.

Myth 3: Modal analysis results are unaffected by mesh density (Lol!🤣):

Truth: While less sensitive to mesh density, modal accuracy can suffer from insufficient refinement, especially for intricate geometries.

Myth 4: Modal analysis is a one-time process.

Truth: Some may think that modal analysis is a one-&-done task conducted during the initial design phase. In reality, it is an iterative process that can be revisited throughout the lifecycle of a structure.

It allows engineers to validate design changes, diagnose performance issues & monitor structural health over time, contributing to continuous improvement.

Myth 5: Modal analysis is only suited for linear structures.

Truth: Modal analysis has evolved to address nonlinear structures as well. Advanced techniques now allow engineers to study the dynamic behavior of nonlinear systems, enabling informed design decisions across industries.

Ex: Suspension bridge with varying support stiffness along its length.

I hope these truth bombs have cured your curse of half-knowledge on Modal analysis & now your soul is purified!

Pass-on this knowledge to your friends & help me spread clarity across the world. 🤝

Happy Analyzing!

🧭 CAE Compass Edition # 27 Ever tried baking a cake and used salt instead of sugar? Disaster, right? Choosing the wrong material model in your analysis feels exactly like that. The structure may look perfect, but it won’t perform as expected! Don’t worry; with a little know-how (and a flowchart), you can pick the right material model every time. Selecting the right material is that easy! Step-1: Understand Your Material’s Personality Materials have distinct personalities. Some are flexible...

Material Failures

🧭 CAE Compass Edition # 26 Imagine you're having a great day. The sun is shining, you’re feeling flexible and happy, ready to take on whatever life throws at you. But suddenly, the temperature drops, and you turn stiff. Sounds dramatic, right? Well, this is exactly what happened to the infamous ship and the root cause was found 40 years later! And still, she doesn't know the root cause 😑 Like people, materials also behave differently depending on the temperature. At room temperature, steel is...

Composite FEA

🧭 CAE Compass Edition # 24 In the previous edition, we explored what are composite materials and their applications. This time we will look at the basic structure of composites, how they are modeled in CAE and some resources for further learning. Let’s go back to the definition! A composite material is simply two different materials combined to make something better. When you mix them, you get a material that’s extra strong, super light and even resistant to electricity! They’re used instead...
